So I’ve been lazy / busy of late, and haven’t written any updates. Until now.

My Sennheiser CX300 canalphones arrived in the post today. I’ve been looking into a new set of earphones / headphones lately, for two reasons:

  • The ones I use at the moment are relatively cheap
  • I’m going to be doing a lot of train travel in the near future, so I wanted something that would isolate my listening experience from background noise as much as possible.

After talking on OCAU to the guy who runs headphones.com.au I came to the conclusion I needed a pair of canalphones.

As with any commercial product these days, there is a wide range of canalphones available. I wanted something that was going to sound good, but not be too expensive, since I’ve never used canalphones before. I decided on the Sennheiser CX300’s.

I’m listening to them right now in fact. A couple of things are immediately obvious. I can hear my breathing. Louder than without the ‘phones in. That will take some getting used to. Also, when I brush my arm against the canalphones’ cord, I can hear that movement transmitted along the wires. So they’re the negatives.

But I think the positives far outweigh the negatives. My music sounds much cleaner. The sound is significantly clearer than my previous headphones, which were clipons. Background noise is signficantly reduced. All in all, I think the quality is quite good for just $75.
